Scents:
Alfredo’s Cafe: Notes of coffee, brandy, and black tobacco. An intriguing, rich, comforting blend of the best aromas of our village square – coffee, brandy, and cigars, laced with leather and incense from the church. Alfredo and his café are real–and wonderful– and the centre of village life. The only thing missing from this fragrance is the sound of old men slamming down their dominoes.
Winter Oranges: The Valencian orange harvest; orange, cinnamon, red apple and clove. A warm, spicy, zesty blend of oranges, red apple, and spices. This is our interpretation of the fragrance of the Valencian orange harvest that takes place throughout winter, with added hints of nostalgia from the English Christmases of our childhoods.
Cloudburst: Bergamot, lavender, basil, lemon and lime, and ozonic notes, along with the beguiling scent of wild mountain fennel and rockrose. Cloudburst is inspired by the mountainside after a summer storm, when the rain clouds part and strong sunshine lances through, stirring up a heavy mist of fragrance. In this haze, notes from our herb garden mingle with fresh citrus from our lemon and lime trees, along with the signature fragrances of the wild mountainside.
Wisteria: Voluptuous and bewitching, Wisteria is a stunning, one-of-a-kind fragrance anywhere, but when it’s flowering in pure mountain air, the beauty of its perfume is life-affirming. “Since our first visits to Spain, to the walls of hanging wisteria in Granada, we’ve been haunted by the narcotic scent and determined to capture it.”
Three Kings: Warm, rich, and magnificently Spanish - with notes of cedarwood, pine, frankincense, myrrh, nougat and brandy. Everyone in the village looks forward to the Three Kings holiday and its unique fragrances –a highlight of the winter months. The trees surrounding the village create a background of cedarwood notes mingled with trampled pine needles, while frankincense and myrrh from the church make an accord with traditional, homemade turrón (almond nougat) and a brightening tot of brandy.
Mistela: Raisin liqueur with spices. Mistela is a Valencian dessert wine usually served at family celebrations, or when lingering after a good meal; it’s a festive blend of raisins and exotic spices often served with a curl of orange peel, or even a coffee bean... The fragrance is distinctive and original yet at the same time warm and familiar.
August Sunset: A hot, floral riot. August is a glorious month - achingly hot in the day, then clouds can bubble up late in the afternoon to create blazing sunsets that are like works of art. In the warm evenings, all the heady scents of our garden rise up to perfume the air: orange flower, rose and geranium mingle with rockrose and fennel; a perfect frame to the painting in the sky.
Galán de Noche: Heady, night-scented jasmine, with tantalising hints of rose, orange blossom, and ylang ylang. Everyone has a jasmine memory and this is ours: a long-ago, midnight walk home through Spanish streets, charmed by the hypnotic allure of night-scented jasmine, whose divine flowers open only after dark and in late summer. Of all the jasmines we’ve planted, our galán de noche is both the most exotic and the most personal.
Sacred Roses: Rich roses and dark cloisters - Deep, velvety Damask rose, garlanded with warm geranium, orange flower, and lavender, while cool chamomile evokes the ancient stone, and sandalwood hints at the towering wooden doors. A 13th century monastery at the foot of our mountain encloses a mature rose garden, bordered by orange groves and lavender. Not a secret garden but, for us, a sacred one.
Siesta: Lose yourself in a sensory lullaby - A summer haze of lavender, juniper, and thyme. It’s siesta time; close your eyes and imagine yourself drowsing on a hot afternoon, gently swinging in a hammock in the shade of a tree, with the crickets chirruping, and the sun-baked fragrances of the countryside lulling you to sleep.
First Light: First Light Luxury Scented Candle. A unique, relaxing candle, with an intoxicating blend of wild, aromatic mountain flora: orange, fennel, bergamot, rosemary, mountain pepper, and amber-y rockrose. First Light is La Montaña’s signature fragrance, in the sense that it was our original inspiration: the fragrance of our new mountain home at dawn on a summer’s day.
Fig Grove: Ripe fig trees and jasmine. A hot summer’s afternoon, a grove of ripe fig trees, and a nearby cascade of wild jasmine. There’s a rocky trail from our house to the next village, and on a hot day it’s a treat for the senses all the way. A dip in the path brings you to a shady grove of ripe fig trees, where you fall under the intoxicating spell of the whole tree – the figs, the bark, and the leaves – combining fruity, woody, and green notes, then balanced by the white flowers of a nearby wild jasmine. If the best taste in the world is a ripe, sun-warmed fig picked straight off the tree, this must be one of the best fragrances.
